Ireland's Martello Trails
Ireland’s Martello Trails is a multimedia programme of The Irish Military Heritage Foundation CLG:
This programme aims to develop a heritage
trail following the network of these Napoleonic sentinels around
Ireland. The programme will take a 360° view of each tower,
developing a trail(s) that takes in the local diverse story of art,
commerce, culture, environment, history, people, sport, and
wildlife.
Aimed at educators, tourists, and local visitors alike, the
programme will be anchored around a website and an app
that together will digitally outline the trail.

Around each tower the programme will:
- Provide heritage and historical information
- Highlight and promote local tourist attractions
- Identify local amenities
- Meet local people past and present
- Link communities together North and South
- Use multimedia tools to promote the programme
Phase 1
Dublin Bay has the largest single geographic concentration of towers, not just in Ireland, but worldwide. A chain of 28 Martello Towers and associated defence works running from Bray, County Wicklow to Drogheda,
County Louth recognised the strategic importance of Dublin - and its port - as
the administrative and economic capital of Ireland. Today Dalkey Island,
Howth, Killiney, Seapoint, and Sandycove are just a few of the landmark
Martello Towers along this route. Complementing this easily accessible
network by foot and rail, are the numerous heritage and tourist attractions,
and amenities such as Bray Aquarium, Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre,
the James Joyce Museum, North Bull Island National Nature Reserve,
and Drogheda Museum Millmount, to name but a few.
Phase 1 will concentrate on the South Dublin Bay area from Bray to Dublin Port.
Phase 1 (2021-22) will:
- Scope the programme and complete initial development with a primary focus on the Martello Towers of the wider Dublin Bay area (Drogheda, County Louth to Bray, County Wicklow)
- Create photographic documentation of all the Martello Towers in this network
- Identify the accessibility of each Tower and the surrounding heritage and tourist sites
- Create an introductory video highlighting the beauty, community, diversity, and heritage of Martello Towers from Wicklow to Louth
- Establish a central website (www.irelandsmartellotrails.ie)
